4 Organization Tips to Increase Your Mood
As busy moms, entrepreneurs, and do-everything-at-once women, there’s nothing we understand better than the importance of organization. After all, it doesn’t take much more than a missing jacket or messy playroom to transform a trip to the store into a frantic rush out of the door that leaves everyone frustrated.
We’ve been there. We’ve done that. We didn’t just get the award; we made the category!
In fact, those mornings, days, and evenings of disorganized frustration are why we created mimish products in the first place. We wanted to help busy moms, dads, and people just like us figure out how to balance family, life, and work in the best way possible. And where better to start on that goal than inside the home.
In our own lives, we know how important home décor is to our quality of life. The way you design your rooms has been scientifically proven to impact the way you feel each day, and we’ve proven it to ourselves time and time again as we’ve witnessed a small décor change having a HUGE impact on our happiness levels. The key is to design your home in such a way that it creates peace and balance instead of disharmony, and that’s what mimish is all about.
The question is, “How can your BUSY family quickly and easily make your life less chaotic with the right organization and design?” It’s not as difficult as you think.
With a little bit of work, know-how, and the right products, you can create more happiness in your hectic home by offering a clean and clear space EVERYONE can enjoy—parents and kids included.
Bring on the Light!
You know what’s worse than a messy room? A dark and messy room! A lack of light doesn’t just look dreary; it makes you feel dreary. It’s why, if you’re anything like us, you make sure to open up every blind, shade, and curtain in the house as soon as you get home from a long day at the office. Studies suggest that sunlight is key for boosting your happiness and combating those midafternoon blues!
Okay, so how do you bring in this all-important light and what does it have to do with organization? You’d be surprised by how often it’s not a lack of windows but too much clutter that makes a room feel dark and dreary.
The problem happens when we try to fit too much stuff into too small a space, blocking sunlight and absorbing what little light we do let in. To make a change, it’s important to remove heavy curtains, except where they’re necessary (like in the bedroom), and to add a mirror or other type of reflective surface across from your windows to help bring light to the entire room. We’ve even found success by choosing bright colors for containers, shelving, and décor to draw in additional light to those really dim rooms.
Add Color
Speaking of color … If you want to be a happier (and less stressed) family, choose bold, beautiful, and bright colors that speak to life. This is especially important when it comes to items that you would normally consider dull or an unfortunate necessity.
Now, we would consider ourselves organization fanatics, so buying new containers for storage is a joy, but we do understand it’s not the same for everyone. So, to make sure organization is more enjoyable and something you’ll stick with for longer, buy products in vibrant shades. You may be surprised by how much more you love to stay organized when you put things away in pretty locations.
For example, you can add our hibiscus pouf to your living room, play area, or den to create a feeling of energy and life while giving you more organization space.
Clean Up Clutter
And when it comes to organization, more important than anything else is the need to clean up clutter. If you have STUFF everywhere you look, not only will it be more difficult to focus, but you can actually feel stress building in your life.
Think about it. How do you feel when your kitchen table is empty and sparkling compared to when it’s piled high with homework, toys, crafts, mail, and more? It’s probably a night-and-day difference. It’s one of the reasons we love to come home to a clean house after a LONG day at the mimish office.
The key to cleaning up the clutter is giving everything in your life a place. You want easy-to-use storage bins of varying sizes for all of your daily living needs from junk mail to toys, books, work items, etc. If everything you use on a regular basis has a set “put away” location, you won’t ever have to search for anything and you can keep the clutter to a minimum. It’s a win-win situation!
Set Organization Goals
If you’ve gotten to the end of this article and you’re feeling a little overwhelmed, don’t worry. You are not alone. We don’t want you to walk away thinking, “Great! Nice advice but I have no idea how to get started.” Getting started is simple and it starts small.
We get it, we’re moms, wives, daughters, CEOs, and incredibly busy women. We don’t have time to do everything, every day. That’s why we don’t try to take on everything at once. Instead, we set short goals for each day, week, and month until we eventually reach what we want to accomplish.
For example, you’ll never hear us say something crazy like, “I’ll organize the entire house this week.” That’s patently ridiculous. However, we will make small goals. “I’ll set aside this weekend to finally organize the master closet,” or “Tomorrow, I’ll organize the first shelf in the pantry.”
It doesn’t matter how small your goal, if you can check it off your list, not only will you be closer to a more organized life, but you’ll love the accomplishment of getting something done.
